Alcazar de Sevilla
On we Friday had breakfast at the apartment. We met at SAIIE, we walked downtown Sevilla and toured the palace of Sevilla: Real Alcázar Sevilla. I learned that the royal family stays at the palace about 3 times a year for business and maybe even more for pleasure. The palace is huge, so many rooms I lost count. There is a mix of architecture inspired by the Muslims and renaissance Catholics.

Next we visited the cathedral.

Inside the cathedral is Columbus’s tomb. His body is held up by 4 people, representing the 4 kingdoms of Spain. The Spanish funded his excursion to the United States. We climbed to the top of the bell tower at the cathedral and looked at the view of the city of Sevilla. It was magnificent, simply stunning. After the tour of the cathedral, it was about 2pm so we walked home for lunch. At first our host family wasn’t home so I messaged her on WhatsApp. She said she is picking up the kids and they would be right home. After lunch we took a short siesta, then decided to walk to the bus station to buy tickets for a trip to Faro Portugal the next day. We should have taken a cab, the walk took an hour! But it was pretty out and the buildings were so beautiful, we didn’t mind. On the way there we stopped in to see the bullfight ring of Sevilla. I’m glad we saw it because it’s such a beloved part of Spanish culture, but I don’t know if I would want to see an actual fight. The bus station was right by the river so we crossed over and walked through Triana on the way back. Triana is a suburb of Sevilla. Maria Morgan-Bathke says that Triana is known for beautiful pottery and ceramics, but we didn’t see any. Maybe we will go back again next week to find the pottery. We got back to Sevilla and looked around in some shops before dinner. We had dinner outside at a tapas restaurant. I had sea bass, artichoke soup and sangria. I have heard that sangria is mostly for tourists, but it was still good! Apparently, instead of sangria, the locals drink Tinto De Verano which is red wine and a pop like sprite.
It is the largest gothic structure in the world! Inside is the largest catholic alter in the world along with countless other alters.
